In 1997, the founder of Active Videos was taking Irish Dance lessons. Frustrated with her lack of options locally for top instructors, she began to consider other options. She wanted to continue to take Irish dance, but she wanted to get exposure to the best instruction available. She was able to find a video online from a specialty Irish dance site, but the process made her wonder what other people would do when faced with a similar situation. Through this experience, the initial idea for Active Videos was hatched.

Throughout her childhood, Kathryn was always active, taking a variety of different dance lessons (ballet, tap, jazz, etc.). In creating her site, she wanted to include both mainstream and less well-known forms of dance. She also decided to expand her product offerings to include exercise and sports. The result is a site that has an extensive selection of dance from Ballroom to Flamenco, exercise from Tae Bo to Budokon, and sports from golf to fly fishing.
